Chapter Eight
Keith was, unsurprisingly, not amused when he came to visit that night and found Noel sitting on my sofa, leg propped up on a pile of cushions and watching TV while I was in the back of the flat getting the guest room ready. With the events of the day and the chaos Noelâs arrival had brought with it, Iâd completely forgotten about our date. The sound of Keithâs voice startled me and I rushed down the hall.
Noel looked panic-stricken. His stunning green eyes were unnaturally large in his sunken face anyway, but now fear had made them even wider. I was sure he would have bolted had he been able to move and I could see the reason why. Keith stood in the middle of the room, staring daggers at poor Noelâand at me, the moment I entered.
âI didnât know we had a guest,â he said icily.
âIt was, uh, kind of short notice,â I explained.
âI see. Care to introduce us?â
âUm, sure. Sorry. Uh, Keith, this is Noel. Noel, meet Keith.â
They glared at each other like a pair of tigers in a cage. Well, Keith glared at Noel who in turn avoided meeting anyoneâs gaze and picked at the blanket Iâd thrown over him instead.
âNoel, huh? How come you never mentioned a Noel? Or did I just forget?â
âKeithâ¦â
âWhat? Iâd just like to know where to place him. Seeing as heâs occupying my boyfriendâs sofa, I think I have a right to know, donât you?â
I felt the blood drain from my face, and I wasnât the only one who went pale, just that with Noelâs pallid skin tone it didnât show much. But Iâd seen him flinch and he swayed. Heâd tried to sit up, but with the cast on his leg his position was awkward.
âIâm sorry, Iââ
âDonât be, Noel. You have nothing to be sorry for. Keith, can I talk to you for a moment, please?â I didnât wait for his answer, just turned around and marched off into the kitchen. He had the decency to follow me and I closed the door behind us.
âWhat the fuck is going on here?â Keith snapped. âWho is he?â
âHeâs a friend, okay? A friend in need.â
âA friend, huh? How come you never mentioned this friend before?â
âOh, fuck you, Keith! Itâs not like I didnât have a life before us. Or outside of us, for that matter. Youâre the one who keeps insisting we should see other people too, so donât you get all possessive of me now! I never told you about him, what does it matter? Heâs here now, and heâs going to stay for as long as he needs someone.â
âAre you fucking him?â
âAre you insane? You just saw him, did he look like he was up for a romp in bed?â
âNo,â he admitted and scratched his head. âI guess I was just surprised, okay? Surprised and disappointed. I wasnât expecting to have a third wheel around.â As always when we fought, the moment Iâd had enough and started lashing out, Keith backed down.
